The heart of the machine is a microprocessor based AC
electrical controller serving a pair of back to back thyristors. They
connect two phases of the mains supply to a transformer to provide a suitable
current voltage and duty cycle for the wire rope to be processed.
The secondary side of the transformer is connected to
two pairs of hard copper based alloy electrodes with a form to match the
rope. Each pair of electrodes clamp around the rope and being spaced a
small distance apart causes the rope to complete the electrical circuit,
the resistance of the rope forming the secondary electrical load. The
electrodes are opened and closed using pneumatically driven mechanical
systems allowing the cable to pass through. The electrical power to part
the rope is selected via the controller. A typical time to cut a 6.5mm
rope is 0.5 seconds. The sophisticated controller offers duel heat settings
and power slope control for difficult materials and electro-plated ropes.
